Made Out Of Gold Album Review

Independent Scottish label Cheap Wine Records has churned out yet another JB Nelson album, this one titled Made Out of Gold. With nine brand new JB Nelson originals and one song written by Mike Snow, Made Out of Gold is an exercise in eclecticism, running the musical gamut from experimental electro noise rock and dark folk, to beat-driven bizarre rock and apocalyptic spaghetti western movie music. If he hasn’t thought of it already, Nelson should definitely consider writing and arranging movie scores, as it is evident he would be quite good at it. As a writer of fiction in addition to journalism, I can hear some of his songs behind the storylines I put down. Made Out of Gold’s opener “Respond to Pain” has a decidedly industrial sound, along with live-wire fluctuations, and slow, dark vocals. “Weapons” changes things up right away, with big flowing notework and imitation tom-tom and tin can percussion that come across like the rhythmic hoof-stomps of Baphomet himself. The titled track is a combination of the first two styles, and it works rather well—a marriage of organic and mechanical. “Blood Red” is the song by Mike Snow, yet Nelson plays and sings it in such a way that one can imagine it attached to a gothic film or urban fairytale. “I Don’t Care About the Planet” is a rambling piece of cynical country with electro undertones from a Cassio or some such key-operated instrument. It goes on from there to songs such as “Watch the Weeds Grow,” “Rewire the TV Set,” “Living Alone,” “Freedom of Speech,” and “Wait for Dark.” Rather than describe them all and run the risk of spoiling the surprises that wait on this album, I will let you experience them yourselves. JB Nelson has a variety of projects he juggles like a champ—one-man acoustic blues band Sleepy Eyes Nelson, Celtic folk endeavor Longshot Nelson & the Disjoints, and so on.
